KARAMA will be the first Human Rights Film Festival in Jordan. The festival will extend for 5 days starting on the 5th of December 2010 and ending on the 10th to mark the international day for Human Rights. The main Festival activities will take place in venues in Amman but will also have screenings and debates in 4 universities outside Amman. The festival will be organized by Community Media Network and AlMa’mal 612 and will partner with the Royal Film Commission of Jordan (as screenings Partner) and the Jordan National Center for Human Rights (as a content partner). The festival will screen around 20 films in addition to hosting debates related to the films and themes.

Background/ introduction
Although many regional and international human rights organizations are becoming active players in the discourse about rights in the region, no significant HRFF has started yet in Jordan or the surrounding Arab countries. Sensing the need for such a dynamic, a founding committee for the first Jordan Human Rights Film Festival was established in July 2009.

The Committee approached organizations and individuals who could be potential stakeholders for this event including film suppliers, Human Rights Festival's organizers, local and international organizations.

The main project objectives

1.    To start the tradition of proper Human Rights Film Festivals in Jordan and the region.

2.    To enhance the discourse about Human Rights issues in Jordan in a dynamic and attractive way.

3.    To Network with and among stakeholders related to the fields of human rights and film.

4.    To educate young Jordanians and the general public on their rights and on violations of rights elsewhere in the world, in order to be aware of their rights, and to increase the sense of global commitments.

5.    To empower the civil society towards their participation and awareness of their rights.

6.    To create debate about democracy, freedom of expression & media, and about specific human rights issues.

Target groups

·         Primary audience:          the general public and the youth of Jordan.

·         Secondary audience:     policy makers and civil society organizations.

Project description
We intend to categories the activities during the festival thematically. The festival will extend over 5 days. Each of the 5 days will focus on one theme. Q and A will be an essential component of the festival linked to the screenings of the films. Specialized partner organizations will take the lead in the other activities according to the theme/day in close reference to the films of that day. The activities could include lectures, workshops, photo exhibitions, book exhibitions and performances.

We intend to invite 7 to 9 celebrities to the event.  Those could be famous filmmakers, actors, human right activists, politicians or officials. Our festival guests will be speakers in special panels.

We intend to screen 10 feature length films and 12 shorts. We will have at least 2 screening halls, one big and the other small. Each film will be screened at least 2 times during the event.

Conference halls and display areas should be close to screening halls.

The film screening will be hosted by the Royal film commission of Jordan. The other activities will be coordinated with the leading organizations in the field such as The National Center for Human Rights.

Philadelphia University in Jerash and Al Yarmouk University in Irbid in addition to 2 other Universities outside the Capital will host several festival activities including Screenings and debates

Future expansion:

We intend to connect and collaborate with our affiliates in Lebanon and Palestine as of 2011.The fruit of this collaboration will be a caravanning Human Rights Film Festival that can extend its impact to Palestine and Lebanon in a smaller scale to prepare these two countries to be part of Karama Film Festival mounted in Jordan.

We intend to enlarge our activities during the year 2011 by organizing separate screenings along with panel discussions related to Human Rights Films under specific themes that we see necessary for some occasions during the year of 2011(International Women's Day, International children's day and other categories such as ecological, civil, political…etc).

Program:

The program will contain films related to citizen’s rights, women’s rights, children's rights etc. Debates, lectures, round table discussions and cultural activities will be organized during the festival days in close link to film screenings.
